A must visit for those interested in history
The remains of what was once the largest and most beautiful castle of Holland (note: NOT the Netherlands) were excavated in the 1930s and can be visited for free. The foun dations can be walked upon and that will give you a good idea of the sheer size of the structure, that originates from the 15th century. The Lords of Egmont played a very important part in the foundation of what is now known as the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Excellent stuff, if you're interested in history!

lovely travel

foundations of historic Egmond Medieval Castle
I enjoyed my visit to the restored foundations of Egmond castle.It was a nice pause on a bike trip through the Bergen nature reserve nearby.The foundations were restored in 1933.The castle was build in 1208 and destroyed in 1573 after the lord of the castle LAMORAAL VAN EGMOND was beheaded in Brussels by the Spanish duque of Alva in 1568. The castle was destroyed by dutch independance fighters in 1573 to prevent it falling in Spanish hands.It can be seen in a short time but make a nice stop when you are in the area.
