Brilliant place to visit better than the Rijksmuseum !
We just went here to go on the replica boat they have but it ended up being the best thing we visited in Amsterdam. The building is beautiful inside and out - the atrium is reminiscent of the British Museum and the layout is so clear it’s easy to find everything. The section on navigation is beautifully set with a twinkling night sky over the whole room and of course the boat is fantastic. Even the restaurant and gift shop were a pleasure to visit. We will definitely go again. (The Rijksmuseum was a nightmare)

Not enormous but interesting for all ages
It's not a massive museum but the price was reasonable. There were 4 of us aged between 8 and 70 and we all found things we enjoyed. The replica ship was definitely a hit, as was the VR experience. We did both twice! Everything is in Dutch and English which was brilliant as we didn't miss out on anything and made the experience more immersive for my daughter as I didn't have to translate everything for her! I was disappointed the golden barge wasn't open for viewing but we all thought the whaling exhibition was really good. I was a bit unsure it would be suitable for a child but it was very interesting for all ages. The staff were very helpful and pleasant and spoke perfect English. You can't take backpacks in but there are lockers to store your belongings which are free of charge and a large one was spacious enough for our coats and a couple of bags. The facilities were very clean and there was a good choice in the café.
