Surprisingly good
The museum is in two buildings, the old town hall and an old merchants' house. These buildings are interesting by themselves. The contents of the mechants' house are what you'd expect in most Dutch towns with a history of some importance (and that's already quite good!). To be rated excellent one needs to present something unique, and I think one gets that in the town hall, where the gigantic shoes of a former inhabitant of Edam are presented, along with her painting, and a painting of an extravagantly bearded man. Set in a typical small old Dutch town environment, I was very pleased with my visit. Seeing the church tower with its bell ringers' guild finished it off. And I didn't even mention the cheese.

mixed blessings
Dont miss this "crooked old museum" nor a walk around this small but historic town with its impressive church, old streets and a history of flooding! because of this the buildings cannot have cellars! with a fluctuating water table, there is the square with its old cheese auction house and lovely architecture, a second church with its wonderful bell tower which rings every 15mins, so much to see just watch your step as the roads and streets have very irregular surfaces!!

Surprisingly Brilliant!
I thoroughly enjoyed this museum, a lot more than I expected to, to be honest. It is very quaint (with quite steep and small stairs!) and as a lot of other reviewers have already stated, the basement is a must see! The staff are so lovely, we had a great conversation with one worker and she gave us a lot of information about the history of the house and what not. The audio tour guide is included with the price of €5, which is always great in my opinion. You can also visit the town hall across the road, which has more interesting paintings, also included in the price. Really glad I decided to visit.
