    Charming
Enkhuizen is a charming town. It is very walkable and it was interesting to view the various building and canals.

    Defense of Enkhuizen anno 1540
Nicknamed "Drommedaris" centuries after it was built to fortify the harbour and city of Enkhuizen in 1540. At the time, the major reason for defense was the ongoing rivalry between Holland and Zeeland on the one hand, and Friesland and Gelre on the other. In 1517 "Grutte Pier", a Frysian warlord had successfully raided nearby Medemblik. Almost the whole city was looted and burned down, many city dwellers killed. So a major investment in defense was understandable. The towers of the gatebuilding were heigthened roughly 100 years after they were built. The works started a year after the war with the Spanish was concluded. Another major investment, though I am puzzled why? Was it to underscore the prestige of the city in competition with big brother Amsterdam for a bigger share of worldwide trade?
