Castle Radboud, North Holland Province, The Netherlands

4.0 (95 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Medemblik Castles

Its the middle ages all over again.

I am a volunteer in this Castle. So yes it is very important to me. The castle is very old. But great fun for adults and children. There is a hunt for the kids and in the summer season is always an exhibition. Also, there is often a falconer with birds of prey and owls. You can also attend a workshop with him. In short, there is plenty to do in Castle Radbout.

    Reconstructed castle, best for kids.
The entree over the bridge is wholesome, really beautiful and got our hopes up. Inside we had to wait on an Long explanation in kinda english and after than the same explanation in dutch to peeps in front of us. The audiotour is quite nice, but when you reach the attic it's getting boring and more for kids. It's reconstructed and you cant really see historical features. The floors, cealing, doors, chandelier are old and the most history your going to see in there. The castle battlements were just a small part, but the best part of the tour. The cafe below the castle is really cute and cozy.

Nice small castle, especially for kids
Originally this castle was built by count Willem III of Holland and his son Floris V to suppress the rebellious West Frisian population in the 13th century, after Holland conquered the western parts of Friesland. It is beautifully located at the shores of the IJsselmeer (formerly the Southern Sea) at the harbour entrance of Medemblik, the oldest town of Northern Holland. Although the castle has been restored, destroyed and rebuilt again, it is a beautiful, well maintained building in which you can feel the Middle Ages. The exhibition about the history of the castle and the surrounding area is small, but that makes it very attractive for children, who can feel like they have returned to the ages of knights and dark dungeons. For kids the castle has a nice puzzle tour with a different tour depending on the age of the kid. Also on exhibit are some archeological finds from near the castle. Taking a tour in this castle won't take more than an hour. Tourguides are available, at least on Sunday. As with many of these old castles, access is rather a hussle for people in wheelchairs. There is a small cafe, where you can get some simple things as coffee and homemade cake.
