An Excellent Zoo for a Close Up Experience

The Dakota Zoo was founded in 1961 by Marc & Betty Christianson with the help of a host of dedicated volunteers. The Dakota Zoo opened its gates on June 3, 1961 on 15 acres of developed land, with 75 mammals and 23 birds, and 40,000 visitors passed through the gates that first year. Today, thanks to the continued support of members, visitors, donors and volunteers, the Dakota Zoo has grown to a 90 acre facility housing 600 animals, birds, reptiles and fish representing 125 species and visited by more than 150,000 people each year.

    This zoo is a gem
We arrived at 10:00AM, right when they opened. Every employee we came up on practiced social distancing and inside were masked. The animals in the morning are great. They were all active, thinking that we were bringing them food. Great layout and just a wonderful morning walk. A must if in Bismarck

    Rare display of large animals!
What a pleasant zoo to visit! There were playgrounds, petting zoos, and a wide selection of animals to entertain the youth. The indoor learning center where the reptiles, fish, and other small creatures are kept is so cool! There is even a live bee hive inside. You can watch the bees working nonstop. It was rather mesmerizing! The large outdoor creatures are incredible. Camels, Reindeer, and Bison were so majestic! I will be back for sure!
