Fort Mandan State Historic Site, North Dakota, United States

4.5 (98 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #2 in Washburn Historic Sites

Interesting place!

Visitors can step back in time at the reconstructed Fort Mandan, a fully furnished, full-size replica of the fort in which the Lewis and Clark Expedition overwintered in 1804-1805. Their time here was characterized by the hospitality of the Mandan and Hidatsa peoples. In fact, this is where they met and built friendships with such important figures as Sacagawea, Toussaint Charbonneau and Sheheke-Shote. Available by guided tour only, weather permitting. Many great learning experiences are available at Fort Mandan. Join one of the guided tours that depart at regular intervals throughout the day. Our interpretive staff is always on hand to bring the stories of that winter to life through programs on a wide array of related topics. Exhibits in the Visitor Center reveal that winter in greater depth, while a children's play area allows young visitors to discover history with costumes, camp supplies, and more. Our museum store offers a great selection of souvenirs, beverages, and snacks.

    Tour must be Scheduled
Fort Mandan is about 2 miles from The North Dakota Lewis & Clark Interpretative Center. Admission is $8 per person and includes a tour of Fort Mandan. Pay at the Interpretative Center and find out when the tour starts at the Fort Mandan site. This is the only way to see the fort and learn from the staff person about 1804-1805 wintering of Lewis & Clark and members of the Corps of Discovery. Learn about their interactions with the Mandan and Hidatsa tribes. By the parking lot is a good view and statue of the dog Seaman.

Don't miss Ft Mandan at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center
Admission to Ft Mandan is included with the ticket to the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. The reconstruction shows how forts may have appeared and operated in the early 1800s. Our guide, Aubrey, was knowledgeable and entertaining as she described who stayed where at Ft Mandan, what they ate, and what their daily activities were. She also recommended a short groomed hike along the Missouri that was fun too.
