Bannerman Cruise & Walking Tour, New York, United States
4.5 (241 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Newburgh Boat Tours
Hidden gem!
Pleasant boat ride to the island learning some local history of the area. The island tour was fantastic! The knowledgeable and engaging tour guides tell you a fascinating and exciting tale about this unusual island and the life of the man behind it all. The ruins and the immaculately kept gardens were gorgeous. After the tour, you have some free time to explore the island on your own. There are many many steps from the dock to where you begin the tour, so sadly I would not recommend this to anyone who has mobility issues. I recommend wearing comfy shoes with good tread as the terrain can be steep in places. Dress in layers as the boat ride may be windy, but you will work up a sweat exploring the island. There was a small concession stand/gift shop area on the island where you could buy a cold drink, and a restroom if needed.

Beautiful Bannerman island
I have wanted to take this for a long time and was very glad I finally did it. The gardens are nice and walk around the tour area was a refreshing change during covid with all beautiful vistas of the Hudson River and surrounding mountains. The setting sun added an extra special lighting affect on our pictures. The tour guides were knowledgeable and shared their affection for the aging property with many anecdotes and pictures. They were also very strict on safe social distancing, mask wearing and hand sanitizing. Even the boat captain had his own interesting flare of character. I recommend it is a relaxing evening event. I only wish they gave more information on parking. Spaces can be found around the boat dock but be careful as many spots are tied to the train station and seem to require permits.

Worth it!
Bannerman Castle is an interesting piece of local history. Everyone in the local area knows about the island in the middle of the Hudson but most people can't tell you the history and even fewer have been to the island. The Bannerman Castle Trust has made great progress toward restoring the parts that can be salvaged including the home, the gardens and the ruins of the castle. It's well worth the price of the ticket to take the boat ride to the island, see the structures and hear the history.
