State Capital as an Art Museum

I did the Discovery Walking Tours of Santa Fe and the tour Guide Allen recommended that I visited the State Capital art gallery. I am so glad I did. Must see for Santa Fe. FREE art museum!

    Unusual, Smaller State Capitol
The New Mexico State Capitol is worth a visit, especially for those who like visiting public buildings like this like I do. It is one of the smaller capitols, especially for someone used to one as large as California's, and it is also relatively new, having been competed in the 1960s. The hallways are lined with art and there is a nice central rotunda area with glass ceiling and floor inlaid with the state seal. The doors outside have some nice details. It is more modern in style than most state capitols, given that it is much newer than most, and the round structure with the relatively plain exterior also make it a bit unique. One problem is that it is not open as regularly as some capitols. It is closed Sundays and only open sometimes on Saturday. Even on weekdays when it is supposedly open until 5:30, they evidently sometimes close early. Before we went, I decided to double check that it would be open on the Thursday when we would arrive there, not a holiday. Therefore, I had e-mailed the capitol's contact and they responded that it would be open that day until 5:30. We got there just in time to see the inside but only very briefly because they decided to close at 3 pm that day simply because they ended government business early. Be prepared, therefore, for the possibility that it may close earlier than expected and double check the website for the limited openings on Saturdays.

More than just a capitol building
We visited the state capitol building and were pleasantly surprised by what a great art venue it is. At the time we visited there was a quilt exhibition called Weather or Not from the Studio Art Quilt Association of New Mexico, which was a wonderful treat! We also visited the upper levels and were amazed at the wealth of art there, too. The legislature was not in session, but we were able to see their chambers. A beautiful building worth the time!
