Huge but pretty
We used liberty state park to access the Statue city cruises' ferry to the Statue of Liberty's, Liberty Island. GPS. Gets you to the state park just fine, but once in the park, it leads you to the visitor center, which opened at 8:00 a.m., luckily for us. The young man was frei fly and helpful. He pointed us in the right direction. The state park is huge and we easily could have missed out 9:00 a.m. ferry traversing the long and plentiful roads of the park. If you are going for a scheduled ferry, arrive early to figure out where to go. Liberty State Park was beautiful and had lots of great views of New York and Lady Liberty.

Liberty State Park by car
Originally we planned to spend a day-part by walking around in Liberty State Park. But as we had a (rental) car we decided to take a tour of LSP by car. In that hour we visited couple of highlights: 9/11 memorial, the old railway station, the walkway around the Hudson and Flag plaza, with very nice views of Manhattan and statue of Liberty. All done within 1 hour. If you have plenty of timing, allocating a day-part to walk and relax could be an option. For us the car-tour seemed to be sufficient.

Best launch point for Statue City Cruises to Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island
Statue City Cruises is the only company that ferries you to both islands. The departure from Liberty State Park is easy. Lots of free parking and much less crowded than the New York City side. If you are already in NJ, this is the way to go! Reasonable prices too for the ferry and a very workable schedule to both islands.
