    EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE ABOUT BUZZARDS BAY
On our first daytrip in New Bedford, we were unable to find The Richard C. Wheeler Bay Learning Center at Buzzards Bay Coalition because the Garmin led us past it and around a corner to several businesses. At my friend’s house, we looked it up on a Google map. It was before the turn. So, on another daytrip to New Bedford, we knew exactly where it was. The sign out front wasn’t very big. Admission was free. This attraction is operated by the Save Buzzards Bay group. Its purpose is to educate people about Buzzards Bay and how to protect it. One of the main exhibits was a large 3-D map of the Buzzards Bay estuary done to scale. It showed not only the land and sea but also the underwater ledges and banks underneath. There were fish tanks that showed the difference between clean and polluted water. One of the docents accompanied us as we browsed the exhibits. He added additional commentary to the displays. Outside, there was a sculpture garden with huge eelgrass. We thought it could have been more attractive. Since the attraction is located in New Bedford's Historic District, a visit there can be easily combined with visiting other attractions. We rate The Richard C. Wheeler Bay Learning Center at 4.25. Our two granddaughters live within the boundary of the Buzzard’s Bay water environment. They were excited about finding there neighborhood on the large map. All the land masses are identified within the large map of Buzzard’s Bay, including lighthouses, ledges, Cape Cod Canal, and shorelines. The guide was very welcoming and invited lots of questions. If you live near Buzzard’s Bay, it is worth your time to spend 15 to 30 minutes here.
