Altar Rock, Massachusetts, United States

4.5 (26 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Nantucket Historic Walking Areas

One of the best hike

One of the hikes with different vista, broad and wide, and different color in landscape. It's unusual on an lsland in Masachussetts. If you walk, it's fine. You can decide which trail you want to do for different length. It's also possible to drive. However, be aware that you need to have a good height clearance, since some part of the trails are bumpy and the wheel track are quite low beneath the ground.

Address

The second highest point on the island
Folger hill near by is higher 124 ft. When I was a kid this is what most of the island looked like. Good view of the harbor on a clear day. Bring your binoculars.

    Middle Moors-Altar Rock
Great views, easy hiking, and one of the best ways to see the coastal heathland habitat on Nantucket. There are low-growing shrubs like huckleberry and low-bush blueberry, sedge, moss as well as goldenrods, asters, and other wild flowers. It's one of the highest elevations on the island and you can Polpis Harbor, Great Point and Sankaty Light.
