    Great birding
    You have to go way out of your way to birdwatch here, but it's worth the drive. I always see species you don't find a lot of other places, and it's remote and quiet enough that you're not dealing with a lot of other vehicles, etc. If you plan on leaving your vehicle to walk, bring insect repellent. The mosquitoes here are legendary.

    Bird-watching Wonder
    If you are interested in birding this is a great stop. There is a loop trail to drive through the refuge. We went in early May and didn't see another car. But we saw plenty of shorebirds and even a short-eared owl. I think there is a small herd of buffalo nearby but we didn't see them. Also a visitor center with some stuffed specimens and a path around a nearby pond with a resident Great Horned Owl.
