Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, Montana, United States

4.5 (68 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Lakeside Ski & Snowboard Areas

Best Ski Mountain in the Whitefish Montana area

Best Ski Mountain around. Prices are half of what another nearby mountain charges and you can park right in front of the lodge. No lines for the lifts . This is a local favorite and once you've been here you'll see why. I really enjoy this place.

    What a great place!
I had driven by before, on the way from Whitefish to some of the other Montana notables, and had been told that Blacktail was just a little mom and pop. But this time I drove up on a bluebird day with a few inches of nice snow, and was more than pleased to have done so. What a unique 'upside down' mountain! You drive to the top and ski down. In fact. I was told that in good conditions you can ski out of bounds right down to Flathead Lake! Granted, the tenure is not large, beyond bounds excepted, and the vert doesn't compare even with Turner, but FUN glades, sides of runs untouched mid-day, and a pretty varied terrain. The folks at the lodge are uber friendly, the price of a ticket for a senior like me is bapkis, and just when you are ready to quit, the lifty says it's ok to do another run. (Just don't get caught out at the Crystal chair with no way to get back out at closing.) The views across the valley to Whitefish, Great Northern Mt. and the whole range, including the ominously named Broken Leg Mt., are spectacular. It is a long ways up on a pretty good road (built by the military, and Blacktail has a radar dome and a thicket of comm. towers). Don't do as I did the first time. Ski Blacktail!
