Momence isn't Charleston or Natchez or Savannah, but...
Momence, Illinois, isn't comparable to Charleston or Natchez or Savannah when it comes to antebellum homes or architecture. But the tiny Kankakee County community (population: 3,149), east of Kankakee, on the Kankakee River, dates to 1834 and features a bevy of beautiful homes that were built in the late 1800s and remain today. One of the most significant is the Graham Historic House and Museum, which was built in 1869. Located at 117 North Dixie Highway, the house was saved from demolition in 1973 by the Momence Women's Club, which proposed to preserve the house in order to create a small museum, as testament to its location and historical significance. Within a year, the house was renovated with fresh exterior painting, landscaping and interior decorations and opened to the public. In 2006, the beautiful Italianate style home, along with several other buildings in downtown Momence, were added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 2013, the two-story, wood frame house was renamed the Graham Historical House in honor of its original builder and owner, William Graham. It has emerged as an integral part of the history of Momence and a destination for locals and visitors to experience memories of the past.
