St. Joseph's Church, Hawaii, United States

4.5 (87 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Molokai Churches & Cathedrals

Interesting and very historical

This is one of our annual stops when we drive to the east side of the island. Father (now Saint) Damian devoted his life to the patients and built three churches on the island, this being one of them. Thanks to the efforts of the late Larry Helm, there is now a statue there of Brother Dutton which also has a great history surrounding it. Certainly worth the time to visit and learn.

    The History and the Solitude
If you stay at WaveCrest, this church is a very short drive away. So simple, so austere. It reminded me of what it must have been like when it was an outpost for Fr. Damien's work on the island. The inspiration was incredible. It is such a beautiful, quiet, peaceful place for reflection and prayer.

    Spiritual Connection
This is the second Catholic Church built on Molokai under the direction of Father (now St.) Damien. It is small and quiet, only used by the Parish these days for special events. But the door is unlocked and visitors are welcome to stop in. Inside, there is a bulletin board with information on the history of St. Damien's ministry. Damien's story is interesting and moving. People of faith will likely feel a spiritual connection upon entering. Outside the church, there is a statue of Damien and a small graveyard. We hadn't planned ahead to schedule tour of the Kalaupapa Peninsula, so I was glad we took the time to stop and visit this church and to read more about St. Damien and the community he served.
