Overlook to Kalaupappa State Park and Phallic Rock

This is a great place to visit if you don't plan on taking a trip down to Kalaupappa State Park...or even if you are as a preview for a trip. The highway ends at the park. There are two paths - go right for the one to the overlook, a short gentle walk to the highest sea cliffs in the world. Jaw dropping beautiful; go left for the .13 mile hike (with slight incline, exposed tree roots, and rocks) Suggest tennis/hiking shoes, although I made it in flip-flops. Beautiful forest area. Faculties available. Enjoy!

    Pretty area, great views
The ride to Palaau State Park was nice. They have restrooms and would be a great place to picnic. There's a short walk to the Kalaupapa Lookout. There's gorgeous views of Kalaupapa National Historic Park and Peninsula. There's also a short and easy hike to the Phallic Rock. We did the "hike" in our slippers and everyone was else we saw was in their slippers, too. We got eaten by mosquitoes, though. Bring bug spray!

    Stunning views from overlook.
The park is not real big, but it was definitely worth the trip to the north side of the island. We took two short hikes, one through the forest to the Sacred Rock, and the other to the overlook. The overlook has stunning views of the village below. We were unable to take the hike down, because they restrict the trail and entry to Kalaupapa to people only over the age of 16, and we had a 14 year old with us. Interesting Hawaiian pine forest in this park to walk through.
