This site is famous as a battleground and as a place of refuge. Kamehameha the Great shed rivers of blood in Kawela in order to capture the island as part of a larger assault on O'ahu.

    Got here by accident...
    I didn't realize until later the historical significance of where we were. We rode/walked our bikes up a hill (paved road) and the trouble getting to the top was worth the views we beheld. Maui to the east, Lanai to the south, and Oahu faintly off in the distance to the west.

    Beautiful views and history
    Drive to Kawela Battlefield by keeping to right to end below water tower. Good walk up to water tower with awesome views of the ocean and Lanai!! 1000s died fighting King Kamehameha there. Bones and artifacts are still being found. DO NOT remove anything from the area so archeologists can research it.
