Great Beach for swimming

There were nobody on this beach when we went. I was not wearing my bathing suit, so I went skinny dipping. How liberating!

    Nice little cove
This little cove is way down at the end of road. It is very small and very secluded. A good place to swim and sit in the sun. I did not have snorkel gear with me but I would think that it would be a good place to snorkel. If you have a kayak it would be a very good place to launch. The waves do not break on the beach on a calm day getting out into the ocean would be very easy.

Great beach on the west side with a nice swimming area....
This particular beach lies near the end of Pohakuloa Road. It is a nice half moon shaped cove with mostly white sand. In the middle of the cove is what remains of the Japanese ship that gives the cove it's name...snorkeling the cove we easily found a large anchor and partial hull of the ship. The cove is safe for swimming but once you pass beyond the mouth of the cove the current and winds can easily take away an inexperienced swimmer. This hazard was really brought home while we were there...a couple in a kayak were dumped over by the waves at the mouth of the cove....the male swam to get the paddles and the female swam to the kayak...within moments the kayak and female were on their way out to sea. A fire department rescue team had to respond with jet skis to retrieve the woman and the kayak. By the time they were able to locate the kayak and woman they had been blown over 2 miles out to sea...on "their way to the Penguin Banks" according to the fire crew.
