Zippel Bay State Park, Minnesota, United States

4.5 (19 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Williams Bodies of Water

Great beach!

We didn't camp at the park, but instead stayed at a nearby cabin. However we traveled to the park every day to use the beach with our kids. My 8 year old loved that she could walk out very far into the water without it being too deep and my 5 year old loved building sand castles on the beach. I have traveled to Lake of the Woods for years for the walleye fishing, but the beach is my kids favorite part of the vacation!

Great swimming beach, beautiful birch forest
We stayed two nights at the Lady Slipper campground. It’s a tiny campground so the sites are quite close together and not super private. We found it to be very dense and very buggy. If we were to go again, we would choose a campsite at the Ridge Campground. The birch forests in this area are incredible, and the twilight drives through the park are beautiful. Zippel Bay itself is quite reedy and would be a fantastic place to explore by canoe. It seems most visitors are looking for good walleye fishing out on the lake. Since we aren’t fishers and don’t own a boat, we mostly enjoyed the swimming beach, which was fantastic. The black flies were pretty bad, and didn’t respond to bug spray. But, they left us alone when we were out in the water so we just spent most of our beach time swimming and it was fine. We also enjoyed some tasty wild raspberries along a little walk by the marina!

    Yes, There are Bear
We drove through all areas of the park, but only stayed for lunch at the busy beach. It’s a dry year, so there weren’t a lot of bugs. The Sandy beach led out the water — which isn’t very deep. There were children playing in the water and they were only in water up to their hips. We drove through the campground and there were a few people camping. As we drove towards the campground, a black bear ran across the road in front of us. The park restrooms have posters about bears in the area.
