Great with little kids
We are on a trip staying at a resort closer to Walker, but on a chilly day decided to take a day hiking. I was looking for something different than Itasca State Park this year. We had a lot of fun at Bemidji Lake State Park. I wasn’t sure what to expect about the size of the park, but we ended up hiking for a solid 3 hours, with trails that were paved (Rocky Point), wide mowed grass (most of the trip, Homestead and Balasam), board walk (Bog Walk), and narrow dirt paths (the last leg of our trip, Bass Creek trail, clearly less traveled). It was all easy walking for little kids. We found wild blueberries and raspberries along the way to eat (don’t just eat random berries you find, only eat them if you know your wild plants!!), and a lot of Hazelnuts, which weren’t ripe yet. It was a relaxing hike that sometimes came upon a highway, and at one point requires crossing the highway. The bog walk was definitely the highlight, as the different type of plant life and pitcher plants were really neat to see. The beach also looked nice. There are flushing toilets by the parking lot near the beach and playground.

Nice hiking
We were on our way to Lake of the Woods and wanted to stop and see this park. We had about an hour so decided to do the Bog walk. Nice wide grassy path so never encountered any mosquitoes. You have to cross a freeway and it is and easy flat walk. Didn’t realize how much there is to do at this park. Will definitely come back probably in the fall. We are so lucky to have such beautiful state parks.
