Wilderness State Park, Michigan, United States

It's real wilderness

I went with my son to explore this place. I was there over 20 years ago, so it was the right time to refresh my memory. I was expecting much more to walk. After roughly a mile, the ground has become softer and softer. We've ended up by the small pond without option for dry walk. I was prepared for that option. I've switched from hiking shoes to...Crocks. For the next 3 hours they were my only shoes. We were walking from bay to bay. We saw many birds, giant turtle, bald eagles, swan, cranes. We were alone there. I've loved to see many flowers. Everything was quiet, not disturbed by anyone. It was a great time spent with my son. I recommend this place. Take the sunscreen and drinking water. RomanP

Being on the water is great but be prepared for the wind
We camped on site #437, West Lakeshore campground, in September. The site was beautiful and right on the beach, though it was quite windy. We didn't put our trailer awning out for fear it would blow off. It was challenging getting campfire started too. Wilderness State Park is at the tip of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, on Lake Michigan. Most campsites have electrical hookups only. The entire park was open during September when we were there. A whiteboard at the park office reported latest trail conditions. Which was helpful because it had rained recently. There’s a trading post a couple of miles from the park that sells firewood, ice, and other necessities.

Go for the location, not the facilities
The views are spectacular, especially if you can grab one of the lake side lots. The spots are pretty much standard state park spots with some trees, but little privacy. the campground hosts do a good job of checking/picking up each spot each day. There is a fair amount of construction currently underway as they expand and update but we had disruption from that. The reason for my low rating is due to the bath house. Relatively new, with knotty pine ceilings, nice fixtures and counter tops., bu the showers? The look like they came out of a prison. Cinder block walls, with one piece shower head assemblies. Bare, rough, dirty looking concrete floors and nasty looking shower curtains. It's like they ran out of money when they got to that part of the project. I have stated at a great deal of parks, and these are shockingly poorly done.
