Westland Historic Village Park

This museum complex consists of several historic buildings including a barn and an Octagon house which are all open to the public during limited times, usually 1-4 p.m. on Saturdays. All are furnished and the complex is staffed by volunteers. Admission and parking are free though donations are welcomed. There are special events here throughout the year. The newest addition to the complex is the Eloise Museum housed in a separate building and houses artifacts that were originally in the Eloise Hospital Complex such as a barber's chair, seats from the old Gruber auditorium, an old wooden wheelchair, and dishes and utensils. This is of special interest to anyone interested in the old Eloise Hospital Complex.

    Stepping Back in Time
The Westland Historical Village is an attraction that is both very useful and important. The clapboard houses and wooden frames stand as testimony to the strong work ethic of the people who lived in them as well as the time honored and proven methods of construction. They are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It would be great to see modern architects, builders and craftsmen and women revisit these designs and materials to allow us to take advantage of these energy saving, attractive and useful structures in today’s developments. Inside the buildings are period pieces and inventions of the past. My favorite is the Eureka vacuum cleaner which sits quietly on of the porches. Eureka had its headquarters near here and was a leading manufacturer and inventor during its heyday. The picnic tables and open space invite children, and everyone, to play and take their ease with hot dogs and towering glasses of lemonade in the summer months. During the cool of the year the houses and barns are back dropped by colorful leaf blankets from the nearby woods. The winter brings hot cocoa and marshmallows and the quiet and cold of a winter spent celebrating Christmas and all holidays during the turn of the year.
