Veldheer Tulip Garden, Michigan, United States

Good Stop

When in the area this should be on your list of places to see. During this time of year, it is a park in the field next to the store, and have a short walk to the store. They bring in folks by the (multiple) bus loads for shopping and visiting the fields. They were not pouring any molds, or carving any shoes, but they were burning names and dates on souvenir shoes and there was some painting going on. Know it is $15 per to walk to the tulip fields, and it may be a better experience than visiting the Windmill Island Gardens in town - more tulips, and less of a crowd and easier parking and access.

    Tourist Destination; Something To Do
We visited the week after the Tulip Festival and thought most of the tulips would no longer be blooming. Surprise! Most of the tulip were still in bloom and there were no crowds, no lines. The tulips are grown in gardens, not continuous fields. There are wide pathways between flowers, which we found out are actually yearly, alternating planting beds. The expansive gift shop (free to enter) also offers the wooden shoe carving shop (the carver was off mid-week) and ceramic painting shop, where women with either Dutch heritage or talent are painting. Then there is another large store selling tulip bulbs and bison meat. The bison (I counted 6) are a marketing afterthought and not promoted, altho they do have a story. They did not come to the fence; now I know why! All in all this is a tourist destination with a $15 cover charge. I thought the cover was a bit much but then I’m not paying the bills; the Windmill Island Gardens was only $10.

    Disappointed
We visited the gift shop - shoe carver wasn't carving - painter wasn't painting - some of the "Dutch" souvenirs are made in China. NO thanks! We did not pay the $15 entrance fee as we had been to Windows on the Waterfront and driven the Tulip Lanes which both were beautiful. Why should I pay an entrance fee when you expect me to order tulip bulbs?
