USS Silversides Submarine Museum, Michigan, United States

A neat submarine plus ship you can tour!!

My wife and I had visited the Wisconsin Maritime Museum across Lake Michigan earlier in a month so the opportunity came to visit another submarine from WWII. Unlike the one in Wisconsin this one is can be toured at your own pace without having to worry about people on top of you. There’s a nice Museum with exhibits inside that’s worth seeing before you check out the boats. The submarine is the same model as the one in Wisconsin so it will look familiar if you’ve done that one. The cutter ship adjacent to the submarine is nice to explore to though they are in the middle of restoring it. Be forewarned that in the event of rain the exit hatch may be closed so you will have to come out the way you came in. Not a big deal though!!

Fascinating place to visit for a history buff
What a great place to visit if you are a history buff or have an engineering related mind. It was amazing to see what we were capable of accomplishing from an engineering and technology perspective in the 1940’s. I could have spent hours in the museum and sub. Museum was very well laid out and worth the admission fee which goes towards keeping our history alive for younger generations to experience and learn from. Nice staff as well.

A Great Opportunity To See American History Up Close
The museum contains a great deal of history that extends beyond what directly relates to the submarine. Anyone with even a little interest in American history should enjoy the experience. The main event of course is the Silversides submarine. Before walking through it, be sure to watch the movie in the theater. Doing so will help you better understand and appreciate what you see when you walk through the submarine. Also on site is a hundred year old Coast Guard cutter. While it may play a back seat to the sub, it is still very interesting to walk through. Be aware, moving around on the sub and cutter involves climbing up and down very steep stairs (about 75 degree angle). Also, moving through the sub involves going through somewhat small hold doors (exactly like what you see in movies). Most people will have no difficulty but some will. If you are in the Muskegon area, don't miss the opportunity to visit this great museum. You could squeeze in a visit in as little as an hour but 2-3 hours would be much better.
