A gem of a botanical garden! Be sure to ask for a tour.

What an amazing visit! The gift shop has some lovely, unique things. The man at the counter asked if we wanted a tour. So off we went. Andi showed us around historic buildings and told us about how they were when it was part of the state hospital. We learned about the history of the state hospital and how the founder, Dr. Munson, believed that beauty could aid healing. He also ensured quality care for the animals of the farm. Then, she handed us off to Rick for a botanical tour Including a Labrinth patterned after the ancient one at Chartres France. There’s a lot to see in this young botanical garden including a native plant garden, a healing garden, a pollinator garden, a rain garden as well as community gardens. My favorite was the stable garden with the adjoining “secret garden” highlighting plants of Japan and China. Big thanks go out to our two docents: Andi and Rick. Thanks!

    Our annual highlight
We have watched this garden start from little more than volunteer dreams to flourishing multiple gardens, each with a purpose and a story. The volunteers and staff have a great passion for this gem. Check out the gift shop. Take a golf cart tour. Listen to their dreams. Find Calista the cow's headstone

    Beautiful gardens & interesting tour!
We were pleasantly surprised to be offered a free tour of the garden upon our visit. It was interesting and informational. The gardens are lovely and all the volunteers were very friendly. Our guide was frank about her expertise (history, not horticulture) and we had a lovely time with her. Her tour was a great compliment to the tour at The Village which we had taken the night before. After the tour we revisited areas that intrigued us. We met other volunteers in the gardens who offered to answer questions and just chatted with us. This was a delightful way to spend a couple of hours.
