Tawas Point State Park, Michigan, United States

4.5 (210 reviews) Monday: 8:00 AM - 10:00 PM Spent Ranking #1 in East Tawas State Parks

A very popular State Park. A Fritomann review.

This is the second time coming to Tawas Point. Last year we got totally washed out, not just rained out. It was bad enough to cancel our intended visit to the lighthouse. July 15, 2022 was totally opposite. Bright and sunny and kinda hot. On a Saturday the joint was packed. To get your Florida tagged car in, you have to get a pass, which costs $10.00 per vehicle for an entire day. Fritomann came solo this time, so you do the math. Around noon, parking was easy. There's a nice sand beach, dunes, a lighthouse of course, and beyond the lighthouse grounds, another beach popular with dogs and their hoomans. There is an enclosed pavilion with picnic tables, with bathrooms, cold running water to scoop and pour on your hot head. Bring your own camp chair and carry it with you if you think you might want to sit down somewhere in the shade.

    Great campground
This is a beautiful place to stay whether camping or staying in one of the cabins. There is a walking trail to the lighthouse available to campers. We did not have a dog, but the dog beach looks fun for pups needing some exercise. We stayed in mini cabin 2. It’s located on the lake side not the bay side (sunrise). It sleeps 6, has a mini fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. It’s directly across from the bathrooms so be aware (the automatic light is very bright at night). Each cabin has a picnic table and fire pit so we could still “feel” like we were camping. We will come back if ever in Tawas.

    Nice Park Enjoyed Our Stay
Very nice park. We have an end space that was nice and grassy. Short walk to the lighthouse. Bathrooms were clean. High water in Lake Huron has encroached on some trails, nothing the park can do about record high water for the Great Lakes. Actually it gives the wetland creatures more territory. I could see where some sites may get muddy during rainy days. No staff to check you in and sign says don't use yellow phones , but instead call the main DNR number. However when i called that, they said NO, use the yellow phone! Updating the signage would have saved us some time at checkin . No flyers for campground rules or map to find your site. Minor annoyances. Woyld go again. Has a dog friendly beach, however very small due to high water.
