Sturgeon Point lighthouse park is a hidden gem. A Fritomann review.

We came on a Saturday afternoon, coming from the Tawas Point lighthouse on the way back to our hotel in Alpena. Just follow the signs, and call ahead to ensure they will be open. Sturgeon lighthouse is being restored inside the residence, so on this day no one could go upstairs to see the old living quarters. But we went right up to the top of the tower and there was a young woman waiting there to answer questions etc. She was a lot of fun in her serious demeanor. We hung around for awhile, then we left to make way for a young family that was waiting, we could hear their excitement all the way down there. I got my passport stamped and even bought a Sturgeon Point tee shirt. So this was Fritomann's last lighthouse stop on a whirlwind tour of Lake Huron attractions in July, 2022. Full speed ahead captain.

Access to lake for rock collecting
This was a first to this lighthouse and we have a cottage in the area! Because of COVID, the lighthouse itself was closed. But it was enjoyable to walk around it and view the old boats that are on the lighthouse property grounds. There are park benches and picinic tables if you wish to bring a lunch or snack. Great access to Lake Huron and there were several families picking rocks and everyone was socially distanced. We found some great Petosky stones! We observed one person hauling 3 ALDI bags full of rocks. Great place to bring your kids tomadd tomtheir rock collection or to skip stones.

A peaceful and quiet spot along Lake Huron. With the higher lake levels it has changed things dramatically since we were there 10 years ago. There is a no visible point anymore, and there is only a couple feet of beach between the water and the grass. There are an incredible array of nice looking stones that have washed up on the beach. The lighthouse is currently closed due to the Pandemic but the grounds are open.
