    Don't Miss It
Maritime Museum. Housed in a historic Coast Guard building, this museum exudes authenticity. We parked on the wide street and were greeted by a friendly attendant who took admission and explained the lay out of the building. There are three floors. To see all the displays, a visitor might spend half a day. The first floor focuses on the car ferry industry. It includes the inception, growth, mergers and development of the business. There are several biographies of important people told electronically. There is also a small theater with three continuously shown short films which are worth watching. The second floor (accessible by elevator) focuses on navigation, storms and ship wrecks in Lake Michigan. The highlight is the pilot house. Visitors can virtually navigate and bring a big ship in the harbor. (I wrecked two boats before I made it.) The third floor has interesting information about the Ludington area. So you know there is too much to absorb in a short time. If I were to do it over, I would start on the third floor and work my way down. The electronic presentations, including virtual experiences are excellent and professional. I could not believe that a county historical society could achieve so much. This is a must.

1 Sept 21 - Headed over to the former 1934 Coast Guard Station (new one is built along side the old). The older station has been transformed into the Ludington Maritime Museum and is filled within its three stories as one well-appointed establishment. Beyond the typical Coast Guard fare the majority of the museum is dedicated to the Car Ferry history (ferries went out of Ludington mainly as rail car transport to and from the three cities of Milwaukee / Manitowoc / Kewaunee, Wisconsin). The second big attraction at the museum centers on the SHIPWRECKS of the coast of Michigan.
