Old Indian Trail, Michigan, United States

4.5 (17 reviews) Spent Ranking #8 in Leelanau County Hiking Trails

Peaceful and picturesque

My husband and I walked here several days while staying in the area. We did the one mile trail (there and back about 2.5 miles) and the black arrow trail as well (over 3 miles). The shorter trail is mostly flat until you get to the end; you have the option of climbing the dune to see the breathtaking views and visit lake Michigan. If you are up for a hike, I highly recommend the black arrow trail. This trail is a bit harder but offers more scenic views.

    One of my favorites
Run this trail often. There are a variety of loops, none too long, and all are relatively moderate to easy as far as difficulty. You can connect out to a remote beach at Lake Michigan as well. Worth the trip!

    Beautiful
This is a 2.3 mile loop hike near the Platte River section of Sleeping Bear Dunes on M22. There are 2 loops. We did the outer loop - the Black Arrow. The Green Arrow is supposed to be flatter, goes through the center. There's a scenic lookout that you have to climb a dune to see. Then it's .2 miles to the lake. Apparently, this is also a cross country ski trail in the winter. We really enjoyed this, even though it was raining when we went. We only saw a handful of people & were alone through most of it. The trail is flat on the south & west part & had some rolling hills on the north & east. The scenery is densely wooded. After leaving the road noise behind, you feel like you're an explorer. There's a wetland area on the east & part of the northern loop. It's one of our top 3 favorite hikes in the SBDNL!
