First Annual Lupus Awareness Walk!

My wife and I organized this walk in May for Lupus Awareness Month. Even though it was a rainy day, many people turned out to walk from Ojibway to 7-Eleven and back. Thank you to all who came out! Ojibway Island is a great place to meet and walk.

Great place for concerts, OH I miss the family oriented history of th place...
Ojibway Island is a park located within the city limits of Saginaw. It is a very pretty island, accessible by bridge or walking path. It has a long history, and I grew up visiting the island often, for family picnics, reunions, just a day trip to the playground with picnic thrown in, walking with my grandfather, end of the year school parties/picnics, birthday parties, concerts, the very much missed WSAM raft races and many other things. It has gone through a long history of poor "occurrences," unfortunately. However, I think now that one can safely enjoy the island, as I see many people walking during their lunch hours, fishing off the new docks, and of course, attending the concerts that the community at large provide during the summer months. I do think they need to "reintroduce" the park-the picnic tables need to be spread out more, (there are so few now), and the grass needs to be cut more often, security needs to be "seen," etc. It is truly a gem for the city of Saginaw, with its location near the zoo, Japanese Tea Gardens, the Anderson Enrichment Center and rose gardens, Hoyt Park, and the Hamilton Street corridor, and of course, being right on the river. It does hold the 4th of July fireworks every year, which is one of, if not the largest attendance in the country (for a city this size). Definitely needs more police presence during the occasion though-especially on the Court St Bridge. The bridge needs a wide path kept cleared for those that need to move around the bridge, cross over, to let the police pass by (some ride horses...). We noted this a couple years ago when the middle of the bridge was wall to wall people and NO one could move, when there was a commotion that alerted people to MOVE and quickly. It was not a pretty sight. So, I hope Saginaw wakes up on this gem of a park and alerts visitors to its locations and use, and continue to bring concerts and other activities to it.

    Not much here
I image if you just wanted a picnic table to catch some rays or fresh air by the river this the place for you. There were a number of young men hanging around with no obvious purpose. So I don't think I would recommend this as a place to take the family. Too bad as the park has some great places to visit nearby.
