Ludington State Park, Michigan, United States

Highly Recommend!

The state park is the reason we choose Ludington for our vacations. We spent several days at the beach, but we walked about 1/2 mile north of the beach house to get a private, secluded alcove for ourselves. The view of the lake is magnificent. With the lake level rising, the amount of shoreline/beach space is rapidly decreasing. What used to be 50 feet of sand in alcoves is now 10 feet, so we had to walk a ways down to get comfy but it was worth it. On windy days, we walked many of the forest/island and skyline dune trails, including the inland trail to the lighthouse. We were amazed at the beauty and diversity of the nature included in the park. Everything was serene and private. Prices and food at the beach house were very reasonable. Entire facility was kept clean. Very friendly atmosphere. (last visit was July 2020 but we've gone here for many years.)

Fantastic beach and state park. I want to return someday.
We had a quick stop at Ludington State Park on our way from the Indiana Dunes area on our way to Traverse City. I definitely would like to return someday to see more of the park. We had our dog with us, which limited us somewhat. We made sure we understood where the dog beach was upon entering, and followed the rules, which didn't prevent one person from questioning whether she could be there. The beach was beautiful. We enjoyed the beach and breeze and ate our lunch at one of the very nice tables outside the beach house. Before heading off to hike the Skyline Trail we each checked out the museum/exhibit area on the upper floor of the beach house, which was pretty good. We enjoyed the Skyline Trail as well, but the various stairway branches off of the elevated boardwalk did confuse us a bit, but once we got back on the ground we very quickly reoriented ourselves and only ended up a short walk from our car. The beach is beautiful, and I can only imagine the rest of the park is just as beautiful.

How about a kayak trail instead of a hike?
Just a quick tip for the kayak/canoe trail on Hamilin lake, Super interesting though the routes could be a little hard in the middle of the summer. However, for a few hours it's fantastic to paddle, portage, and explore the area. Watch for the windy conditions as we had heck of time paddling back with the wind and waves and two kids. But it was still fun, just like I remember from several years back. The park itself seemed more crowded, beaches a little dirtier, and campers everywhere. Although a day trip up to Sleeping Bear combat some of the crowded craziness.
