Fantastic...especially for ship geeks!
Absolutely wonderful time; no complaints whatsoever. The ship's history is very interesting and is told using photos and info signs throughout. Everything is well maintained, direction signs are easy to follow, and the people were all very friendly. Depending on if you read everything, plan on about an hour on board (for ship geeks, like me, a little longer). The interior is utilitarian, not luxurious (it's an icebreaker, not a cruise ship), so don't expect palatial. Admission is $12 per adult for the self-guided tour, which is a bargain. Overall, a great experience!

Lesson of history
The whole visit was very informative. It was great occasion to see the biggest icebreaker in US history. From the far it doesn't look big, but since you step on its deck, you see how big this "toy" is. I was amazed by the size of engines. Three engine rooms and two engines in each were giving about 12,000 horse power for its three propellers. Walking through the entire vessel, we could see almost every important areas: Kitchen, hospital, bedrooms, communication room, the main deck engine room, mesa and many more.... There were also people ready to answer any question from tourists regarding the icebreaker. The weather was not so great at the day of our visit, so the pictures are kind of "gray". If you are in Mackinaw City area, do not miss the opportunity! I recommend it. RomanP

Novel experience
We really enjoyed our visit to the Icebreaker Mackinaw. First and foremost, the people working the ship were really knowledgeable and very friendly and helpful. We were on the ship for about 1.5 hours for the thorough self-guided tour. Quite a few informative videos are included along the way. The tour really helps you understand the key role Icebreakers serve preserving commerce as well as highlighting the amount of commerce on the great lakes.
