Houses are gorgeous, everyone very friendly

The Hackley and Hume Historic Site features the restored homes of Muskegon's most well-known lumber barons with outstanding wood carving, stained glass windows, and period furnishings. A guided tour of the homes offers visitors a look at life in the late 1800s and early 1900s. During the summer months, there are often games on the lawn for our young visitors. The Site is open from May to October. With select dates in November and December for Holiday Tours.

A Covid bonus: I got a private tour!
Lovely historic homes, and a very interesting tour. The architectural detail in the Hackley home in particular is astonishing, especially all the woodwork. It's interesting to see how the restoration has occurred over time -- a few areas of wall are left unrestored so you can see how they repaired the plaster and applied the stenciling. Next door, the Hume home is a bit more practical (they had 7 children) but still gorgeous. During Covid, they are committed to only have tours with same-family members, so that strangers don't share germs with each other. Since I was alone I got a tour of my very own! This was amazing, and I got to ask a lot of questions, which the guides were very patient about answering. Shout out to Alecia and CJ for making it a wonderful experience. Be aware that since this is the policy, you might not get a tour until later in the day. I got there a little after 11 and my tour was at 1. I don't think you can reserve ahead without showing up in person, but I may be wrong about that.

Gorgeous homes - loved them both! Our guide was awesome. You could tell she enjoyed her job! She took her time explaining all the details of both houses and there was a lot to see! We were amazed that they were almost completely booked for the day when we got there at about 10:20am. They had just opened and already they were full until our tour at 1:00pm. Suggest calling ahead and getting a reservation! Gift shop is small but very nice and I bought several things there. Loved this stop! Recommend for anyone who appreciates fine old homes.
