Fort Custer Recreation Area, Michigan, United States

Bike, Hike or Ride

This is one of my favorite go-to spots when I want a quick get-away. Especially beautiful in the autumn, the campsites are spaced far apart for privacy and pet friendly. Most sites are heavily wooded with partial shade. Some sites are open with well trimmed grass. The showers are individual rooms and clean. There are three no-wake lakes with trails throughout the entire park for horseback riding, mountain bike riding or just plain hiking. Eagle Lake has a picnic area, pavilion and swimming beach.

    A wonderful beach
Ft. Custer Rec area offers a wonderful swimming beach on a large lake. The beach has a sandy bottom and plenty of area for swimming or playing. They also have a well maintained camping area, disc golf(watch out for poison ivy), mountain biking trails, equestrian trails, and some great hiking trails. If you are into geocaching there is a challenging multi-part cache here. The beach area has a concession stand. They also rent canoes, kayaks, and rowboats. Overall, it is a beautiful recreation area and well worth a visit. Also, Great Fishing!

Lots of room to roam, very shady, large sites...and if you like to fish, well..
This is the first time we have visited this state park in MI. It is a bit out of the way, sort of hidden. It is a very large park, with long winding drives into and around the park. Access to the Kalamazoo River, and 3 inland lakes. Two of the lakes are for fishing-I believe no motors are allowed. The third lake is very nice, with a nice swimming beach, boat launch, playground and picnic area. You can ride your bike forever in here. Sites are for the most part very large and somewhat private. Lots and lots of shade trees, though there are a few open sites, too. You are surrounded on all sides of your lot with trees, smaller trees, and grasses. There is a small path connecting the sites in most cases. Picnic table and fire ring provided. Mosquitos can definitely be a problem here. Be sure and bring your bug spray! Bathrooms were always clean, though they can be a good walk away from your site, since the campground is so spread out. Park offices closes at 9 and I didn't like that. Pretty much anyone can come into the park after that. Lots of locals fishing from the banks of the lakes or river. Firewood available, but expensive, so we got our up the road. This area is very pretty, lots of winding and somewhat hilly roads to explore. Go canoeing on the K-Zoo River! Very pretty. Within a few miles of Meijer's, restaurants, etc.
