Great day trip

We rented a double kayak and took the shorter trip down the manistee river. Highly recommend. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. We were taken upriver and paddled back to their business. The river is scenic and calm. Unfortunately we got caught in a downpour and spent some time out of the kayak waiting for the storm to pass. But, you can’t entirely predict the weather. They offer overnight trips and we may do that in the future. I would rent from them again.

Second visit, can't wait to canoe again.
Two years ago we canoed the two hour trip, came back to this lovely outfit to do the 3.5 hour trip today. These folks couldn't be sweeter or more helpful. Love it when the driver lifts the canoe over his head by himself and puts it in the water for you! At camp we always had to carry the canoes ourselves! You feel a world away on the Manistee but here you are just in Michigan's great outdoors. The Manistee is a manageable river for an inexperienced canoer. Gentle and picturesque. Scare of the day was when a heron lifted out of the water right in front of us! If you are in the area treat yourself to a day on the river.

    Great Rustic Camping
I have been to Chippewa a couple dozen times over the last 25 years. Most were with a group of friends and lately with a group of families with our young kids. You need to know what you are getting. You are getting huge campsites best suited for groups. You are getting very inexpensive campsites. You are getting freedom and flexibility. You are getting as much firewood delivered to your site (for a reasonable fee) as you can burn. You are getting a nice part of the river immediately in front of the livery to play around in. You are not getting people looking over your shoulder with a bunch of rules. You get a small store on site with ice, batteries, cheap sun glasses. You are welcome to drink beer. This is rustic camping. You are not getting showers or toilets. And you are not getting strictly enforced quiet hours, although people are generally considerate and they work to put like kinds of groups together. When we go with the families, we set up in the rear of the campground away from the party groups and have had no problems even on a popular weekend. During the week, it is very quiet. There are great options for canoeing, kayaking, and rafting. The river up stream has great places to stop and there are few houses. The staff is very friendly and nice. They work with you to meet the needs of your group. When we splash around the river in front of the livery with the kids, they let us borrow life jackets and tubes. This is the opposite of a state park and we like it that way.
