Poe Reef cabin

Beautiful private beach just 40' from the rustic cabin. Clean & newer outhouse. Woodstove worked great & we needed it the last week of Sept! Dogs allowed only at this cabin at Cheboygan State Park. Bring own cookware!

Beautiful view and SUNSETS! - clear warmer water and sandy beach...
My husband and I have been living near Cheboygan State Park for 11 years, however; we used to come here often before moving to Northern Michigan. Lake Huron is beautiful! and Cheboygan State Park and Duncan Bay Beach is awesome. Our visits have been for the day. Mostly we visited in the afternoons/early evenings. The water is crystal clear and you can see to the sandy bottom. And, the water is shallow a long ways with sand bars here and there. We put our beach chairs right in the water and let the gentle waves lap over us. In the summer, the Rangers put buoys in the water to mark the safest swimming areas. And, they raise and lower the colored flags to let folks know of the water conditions. A life boat is on site also. The State Park has a wonderful beach pavilion with nice clean flush-toilet bathrooms/changing rooms (entrances parking lot side and beach side) near the beach just in front of the grassy dunes. The pavilion is available for group events with great parking adjacent. An outdoor shower/water spigot and bench is available for use beachside. September 2020, our family needed an alternate gathering place for a Celebration of Life luncheon (our restaurant hall cancelled due to COVID restrictions). Reserving the beach pavilion on-line was easy. The specs are available on-line and the site accommodated my family group. The local restaurant, Great Lakes Grill, catered to the beach pavilion and everything turned out great that day. The day was so sunny and warm that folks could walk the beach and swim too. I talked with the Rangers a couple times about my event and they were very helpful. I printed a map from the State Park website for my downstate family members to easily follow. In the last 3-5 years or so, the beach has been not so wide and covered with water in areas and with black filaments in the water and on the beach churned up from the burned-out lumber mills from 100 years ago. But last year and this year, the beach has been much longer and wider and clean - and the water clear and beautiful again. I have ventured the trails with my family members in the park. A few areas in the woods are sometimes covered with water in the Spring. Summer and Fall hiking is fantastic. The trail that takes one through the woods and on the beach dunes/beach is awesome. Also, a historic site is in the woods with interpretive signing - and the dunes/beach trail takes hikers close to one of the lighthouses off-shore. I highly recommend visiting Cheboygan State Park for the day. The campground seems very nice, although I have never stayed overnight. They have teepees that can be reserved too - sounds like fun....

Large Private Campsites, Nice Staff, Don't Plan on Swimming by Camp
Title says it all - we were pleased with the size and privacy of our campsite, the cleanliness of the camp bathroom, the enthusiasm of the young staff, and the quietness of this State Park. It is pretty well off the main highway, so it is peaceful. If you get a campsite on the water, be warned that this is a marshy shoreline and not suitable for swimming, though you the park has a nice beach you can drive to or take a small boat to from your site. Really great State Park!
