Blues, Brews & Barbecue, Michigan, United States

3.0 (4 reviews) Spent 2-3 hours Ranking #8 in Birch Run Breweries

Last year was way better, but still had to check it out.

Last year it was much bigger and more BBQ places to buy food from, get samples of dry rubs, and enter contests. The Kansas City BBQ Society hosted it both years, but was not there this year. They did send representatives for judging and handing out trophies. There were only THREE BBQ cookers to buy from, and then carnival booths. There were carnival rides that looked out-dated. The grass in the carnival and BBQ area was not cut at all. The parking area was not cut either and used to be a field no one mowed. I had sandals on and stepped out of the car with my first foot and right into a picker plant that stabbed my foot! Not a good start to the day there. The food was not the greatest from the BBQ vendors.

    Disappointing
This is the 3rd and final time for me at Blues, Brews & Barbecues. I went to the first one and was disappointed in just about every aspect. Mediocre music, very little barbecue, held in an overgrown field. I figured it needed time to get better. Went again a couple years later. About the same except the music had improved with groups like The Rusty Wright Band. Went this year (2016) for the 5th annual Blues, Brews & Barbecues, hoping that after 5 years there would be appreciable improvement in the "festival". Very disappointing. First, there appeared to be numerous barbecue participants in the competition but only 3 places where you could actually buy barbecue to eat. One was the local Famous Dave's, good food but you can go to any of the restaurants in the area and get a much larger menu and nicer atmosphere. Charlie's from the Flint Farmer's Market had good food and a varied menu. I had the Pulled Pork, the best part of the evening! The third barbecue vendor was a place out of Ohio that had a bunch of trophies out front. I ate there last time and it was good. With our bellies full we were ready for some good Blues. Never happened. The only band performing on Friday was some local group that apparently didn't understand what Blues music was. They were a moderately good "bar band" that played a mixture of country music and old rock hits but NO BLUES! OK, they might have played two songs that might fall into the pop/blues/rock category but that's about it. We left half way into the second set, along with much of the rest of the crowd. It is obvious that the organizer of this event missed the main point of holding a Blues Festival, Blues! If you are going to sit in cheap, uncomfortable chairs in a tent, at least the music should be good. Finally, the "brews" were cans of beer that probably came from the local Krogers. Nothing special there, either. The only reason I rated this with 2 stars instead of 1 was because the limited amount of barbecue was good. We spent the rest of the evening at a local bar in Clio. Much better experience. Three strikes for Blues, Brews, & Barbecues. I won't go back.

    Where is the barbeque??
First year trying to attend this event. Was underwhelmed. We went Saturday around noon to 1pm. There were alot of people who were there to compete but only one place you could get any barbeque at. All the competitions I have seen on TV you get to go around and sample the places barbeque. Not here. Just one vender to choose from. Set up.in a field that was not well mowed. Grass was still pretty high. No one was there to assist with parking so cars were parked every which way. Also had a vender area that consisted of maybe 10 tents with a flea market feel. Other food options were deep fried twinkles and oreos. Also thought that if this was supposed to have brews woyld have thought different brewerys. would have brought their different kinds. I saw people walking around with was bud lite. Big disappointment.
