Big Sable Point Lighthouse, Michigan, United States

Well Worth the Effort to Reach The Impressive Big Sable Lighthouse

Though it is a nearly 2 mile walk down a soft sand road, it is well worth the effort to see this impressive historic lighthouse on a beautiful stretch of Lake Michigan. Fortunately on the day we were there, there was an overcast sky and temps were in the low 70’s so it was a pleasant walk. There is no shade on the walk, so be aware that on a sunny, warm day it may become quite uncomfortable particularly if humidity is high. Bring water, a hat, and wear sunscreen! A few days in the summer there is a bus that ferries visitors back and forth so for those who cannot make a 2-mile trek it is worth checking into. The lighthouse is closed on Mondays.

The best light house in Michigan!
I have visited about 15 Light houses in my life. This is my favorite. First the negatives. It is a $10 fee to get into the state park. It is also $8 a person then to get up in the light house. I had coupons which you can find and that saved me $4. It is a 1.8 mile hike one way to get to the light house. It's a 130 steps to get to the top. Then it is a 1.8 mile hike back to the parking lot. If cold bring a jacket. If hot bring some water. Now the positive: The view is just breathtaking! Lake Michigan a 130 high is stellar. The sand dunes are a gem and there are many. If you enjoy sand dune climbing you will be in heaven! The day I was out on top there was 20 Mile Per Hour find gusts. Hang on to your hat and be safe. It's just the best experience when you live to tell about it. You do have to experience it though to really understand the beauty and the magic. The beach is also amazing! White to tan sand that feels just like velvet. The staff is very accomadating. A lot of money and hard work went into this place and it shows. Very well kept. Several benches are also available to rest after the long hike. You have to do this if you are in Ludington MI. A great memory and experience forever!!

    Great Coronavirus activity
This is a great place to go when you want to stay socially distanced. Even though there were a lot of people visiting on the Sunday afternoon when we were there, we never felt crowded. It is quite a hike (1.8 mi. from campground), but it is a lovely hike through the dunes. And then the lighthouse appears! Lovely. The hiking trail has informational signs to explain about the dunes. The light house is closed due to Coronavirus, but it is still a lovely picturesque place to visit. We could not get a campsite in the state park, but camped near by. There was parking for our RV on the side of the road just outside the park entrance.
