Interesting site to visit

We drove all the way from the airport to see this lighthouse. You can get all the way up to see beautiful views. Kids loved it. Also took small path leading to lakefront beach- great views

Worth the drive to the south end of the island!
If you have a car, you must go to the Beaver Head Lighthouse. There's a nice small exhibit inside the main building that describes the history of the light and the lens is on display as well. For those interested in climbing to the top, the spiral steps are sturdy and the view is worth it. We took a picnic lunch and ate at a table right outside the building. Also worth doing is taking the wooden steps down to the beach and walking on the hard packed sand. Saw an eagle!

One of the iconic Great Lakes Lighthouses
Beaver Island has two lights---one at the entrance to St James harbor---and the other at Beaver Head on the south end of the island. The light tower and the supporting buildings are in wonderful condition. The Beaver Head light was built to protect ships from the off shore reefs. Ship passage thru the Beaver Island group is divided into two one way traffic lanes. North bound traffic sail up the east side of the island while south bound ships pass along the west shore. The light show north bound traffic where to change course to pass the reefs. South bound ships use the light to verify safe passage of the islands and the point to change southbound course for ports along the southern end of Lake Michigan.
