Cool but nice float on the AuSable

Great trip on a beautiful river. Going alone was a bit of a challenge because of cool northwesterly wind but there was no hurry.

Super site for a super experience.
This enterprise is a campgrounds as well as a canoe livery, however you do NOT have to stay at the campgrounds to use the canoe livery. It is locally owned and owner operated so the service is exemplary. We stayed at the campgrounds and rented one of their small cabins [sleeps four on bunk beds] (no in cabin restroom but showers, restrooms and CLEAN outhouses on site) but they also have traditional tent camping. We arrived Friday night, moved into our cabin and enjoyed dinner on the picnic table provided for each site and enjoyed a campfire in the fire pit provided for each site. The canoe trip we chose had a ten a.m. departure time which allowed us to somewhat sleep in but not waste the day away. Our trip was the longest distance offered by the livery which takes about five hours if you actually paddle instead of just drift the river. We were part of a small group and we lashed two canoes together and drifted down the river and only paddled when we had to avoid obstacles such as tree limbs or low water and still made the trip within the allotted grace period the livery offers above the stated trip time. The logistics were that you left the campground in a bus and were transported upriver to the starting point. The canoes that we used were clean and well maintained. Once the trip was completed, a bus was waiting at the exit point to transport us back to the campgrounds. We then spent Saturday night at the campgrounds, got up Sunday morning, checked out of the campgrounds and traveled into the nearby town of Glennie to have breakfast at the Chat and Chew [the local mom and pop restaurant) before heading home. Had a fabulous weekend!

    Annual Canoe Trip
Despite the changes with COVID Alcona was still able to help us enjoy an great trip down the Ausable by spotting us a our vehicle at the end of the trip. This was great to be able to do! They are always friendly and easy to deal with.
