Excellent experience with the Captain's Tour
Excellent experience with the Captain's Tour. The company provided the necessary gear (harness, clips, hard hats, gloves, and backpack), lunch (pasties), and a bottle of water per person. We (2 adults) came dressed for 48 F (long pants and long-sleeve shirts/jackets that we didn't mind getting dirty) and wore waterproof hiking boots (which easily handled the stone/dirt/water puddle/timber walking surfaces). Our guide Brandon was friendly and helpful, and he shared lots of interesting information and history during the tour, which lasted 5-ish hours. We also rappelled, went down a slide, and navigated some screes. Overall, the tour was great fun, and I highly recommend it.

    Fun but Frightening
I'm definitely glad we went, and I would recommend it, but I'm not rappelling again any time soon! We did the Miner's Tour which includes rappelling; going over a wobbly bridge over a deep, dark chasm; and walking down a pretty steep & slick path. While the bridge & other part were a little unnerving, the rappel had me more petrified than the rest of the group. I would probably still give this a "5" IF I felt they had checked my gear properly beforehand. Luckily (and this is one reason they do it, probably), they have you practice rappelling ahead of time on the cage that surrounds the hole you'll drop into. I had part of my equipment hooked up wrong, and they didn't notice until I practiced three or four times. I wish they would have been more thorough with that earlier is all, because I'm the one who actually asked about it. Anyhow, everything else was great except that I ended up w/ a huge bruise on my stomach afterward. My wife got twisted going down as she lost her balance, and the worker up top somehow ran down to help her. I thought she'd busted her arm as she got it pinned behind her. Luckily, she was fine, it just made me take a while to try it. The gear must've just been hitting me wrong when I rappelled since I ended up w/ the colorful bruises afterward. I didn't really struggle too much doing it. Another scary part was the ride to the actual mine. We had a very full vehicle, and I don't want to think about what could've happened on that thing if it fell back on the slick rocks!
