Royall House and Slave Quarters, Massachusetts, United States

4.5 (25 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Medford Speciality Museums

Remarkable Site that Places Hidden History in the Open

Forget about the fact that George Washington might have slept there or even its singularly exquisite architectural craftsmanship (unmatched at any other colonial-era home in New England). The star of this show is the story of people largely hidden from history: enslaved men and women. The guest experience is framed by the lives of those for whom these elegant spaces were ALSO slave quarters, comparing and contrasting the intertwined lives of the owners and the owned, and thereby revealing a gripping, untold story that will forever change the way you think about the colonial history of New England.

    Worthwhile Home and Museum Tour
With one of the few surviving slave quarters on display in New England, this small Colonial home and grounds just off 93 in otherwise quiet Medford, Massachusetts is a gem. A brilliant use of time for everyone in the family or at least those old enough to grasp both history and polite behavior.

    Interesting Side of History
I had always been interested in the Royall House but was unaware of the history of the slave quarters. Our organization was given a thorough tour of both properties and I was quite surprised. There is much to learn about slavery in the north and this is a great place to start.
