Surprise in McAllen
We visited Quinta Mazatlan while we were in McAllen. There is a $3 per person entry fee, but it is well worth it. Read the history of the mansion and the grounds. It is exciting. The inside of the mansion/ house is well managed. Most of the rooms have fireplaces of different styles. The clamshell fireplace is fascinating. I love the substantial doors found throughout the house, especially the rough-hewn doors with some wear and tear on them. I made my wife pose in front of the dutch doors. You can exit the house through several doors to the courtyard with the pools. We spent some time walking the paths and looking at the foliage and animals, especially the birds. We ventured further, but it was close to 100 degrees, and we were not well prepared for outside activities. Informative signs throughout the walking trails provide greater details about the foliage and fauna. Currently, the theme is heroes with - there are comic books, Marvel, and other heroes listed along with first responders, military, and health care workers. When we return, we will come when the weather is cooler.

Nice sanctuary in the middle of the city
The house was interesting to visit to see an original adobe home, but the grounds were fantastic. The previous owners created a sanctuary for native plants, water features and paths to explore the grounds. It was fun to see the many bronze statues of native animal species interspersed throughout the grounds. The ponds attracted a variety of birds. Definitely worth a stop. I wish they had a small refreshment area where you could purchase a drink and snack to enjoy on the grounds.
