Fantastic state park

It's a great resource that's underutilized, but that's a big part of its charm. Ruggles Pond is a great place to cool off in the summer, and there are plenty of walking trails in the forest, along with dirt roads that are shared with occasional vehicles. In the winter, it's great for cross-country skiing once there's snow, but note that they don't groom the trails.

    Winter Hike
We spent an early afternoon hiking on several of the trails here. With no snow, it seemed more like a late fall hike. The wooded trails were in good condition with only an occasional wet spot to navigate. The gravel trails were generally good, but a recent thaw left some areas mushy. The woods are a mix of oak, pine with mountain laurel on the ground. Trail maps are available at the ranger station. We underestimated the scale of the maps. This park is large! Although not used, in the area of the main entrance are many sites suitable for day picnics. Picnic benches and charcoal cooking 'stands' are available. Outhouses were seen near the beach area. With warmer weather, this may be an excellent place to visit for hiking then a swim. Enjoyable hike, bring water in warmer weather. Hiking boots are not required as the trails are in good condition. In dry weather, sneakers would be fine.
