Easily the most varied and interesting wooded and rocky area close to Boston
There are people who mindlessly put this place down because all they know of it is the limited area behind the Chestnut Hill shopping areas. Along with Webster Conservation area it is quite extensive - for an urban area, with many of the trails requiring some effort to discover. I've led well over a dozen walks here and my Grand Round route is about four miles long, never using the same trail section twice. Search for "newton conservators map18webster" and there is a basic trail map showing some natural features. There are many other trails not shown, but they may not be maintained - I used to, but no longer have the strength or energy. The farther you are from Hammond Pond and the dog walkers, the quieter it will be - I recommend alternate entry points, such as Madoc Street (dead end off Langley Road) or Houghton Garden. Or - enter at Hammond Pond but take an immediate left up the short hill instead of following the main road and you will soon pass through a slot in the rocks leading to a trail.

Very pleasant walk.
Lots of winding trails, some big rocks to climb, a little pond. Good for families. I wouldn't drive far to go here but if you're in the area and want to enjoy 30-45 minutes outside in nature this is a good place to go. Lots of restaurant and shops nearby.
