Nice but expensive for a family

The colorful and often exciting history of Topsfield Fair began in 1818 when the Essex Agricultural Society, the non-profit organization that owns the Topsfield Fair, was officially granted a charter on June 12th of that year. Topsfield Fairgrounds sits on the former Treadwell Farm property. Dr. John Goodhue Treadwell of Salem bequeathed the farm to the Agricultural Society in 1858 for the "promotion of the science of agriculture." We are connecting agriculture to you!

Over priced Family entertainment with little to really do!!
Affordable is not in this Fair. They charge to much to get in and parking $10.00 with no option. You can do this whole thing in an hour and wonder why you came. Where are the animals, Where is there something fun to do thats not another charge? Food better have some big cash on hand because that 24pack of water that cost 2.99 is now 3 and 4 dollars a bottle. Rides that look like fun there goes another $50 if you have two kids.Just Saying!! This is supposed to be a family fun get to know your neighbor event. Why has it changed so much from when I was a kid to the point is not AFFORDABLE!!

    Decent Fair But Disappointing Ethics
I traveled to the Topsfield Fair from out of state only to see the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's Musical Ride. However, my friend & I decided to visit the fair the day before the RCMP show. We were happy with the fair offerings, until we saw the elephant and camel "meet and greet" and rides provided by R.W. Commerford & Sons. This outfit has previously (and recently) been cited by the USDA for things like failing to provide adequate veterinary care to Beulah the elephant. They are also known to use bullhooks, painful tools to force the elephants to perform. The world is moving away from such antiquated forms of "entertainment," and I hope that the fair does the same. I went to the fair's Facebook page, which I had liked months ago, in order to share some photos, but I had apparently been banned from the page because I liked a review on the page that addressed the issue of Beulah. It is a shame that the fair staff is so close-minded and petty that they cannot even have a healthy conversation. This experience basically ruined an otherwise nice fair. I will not be returning in the future.
