A highlight of our trip to the Berkshires!

The epicenter of Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant." The events that took place on Thanksgiving 1965 became a song, the song became a record, the record a movie. The movie was filmed in 1968 where the actual events took place on location at The Old Trinity Church, which became The Guthrie Center founded by Arlo Guthrie, and named for his parents, Woody & Marjorie Guthrie in 1991. The Center continues the Guthrie Family philosophy of a place for interfaith worship, cultural exchange especially with music and art, and of course a place to eat (during seasonal performances). 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" and the old church will celebrate in style with services and performances that will put a smile on your face and nourish your heart.

    Great lil place.
What a surprise. Having watched Alices Restaurant many years ago we were very surprised to find The Guthrie Centre. We travelled from the UK and were staying in the area looking for places to visit and found it on Google maps. We had a very interesting conversation with a lovely lady called Chris (not sure of how that is spelled, sorry) who was very informative. An unforgettable experience.

    Trip down memory lane
NOTE: As of this review the Division St bridge is closed. You cannot get there from Rte 183 only from Rte 41. I stopped by here enroute to Sheffield. The place was closed at the time but they do have interfaith services, occasional shows and weekly community out reach lunches there. There are also displays. If you are an Arlo Guthrie fan (I am) it is nice to come by the church home of the Brocks in 1965 that led to the song "Alice's Restaurant Massacre" The restaurant itself was called The Backroom in 1965. It was the back room of the General store but you no longer have to "walk right in, its around the back" because the original restaurant location is gone. The general store split their store so you can walk right in the front door of 40 Main St in Stockbrige.
