Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, Hadley MA, Massachusetts, United States

4.5 (27 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #2 in Hampshire County Nature & Wildlife Areas

Never knew that this was a local attraction

...and I lived nearby for over 30 years. Well maintained, lots of ground stone or wooden walks, overlooks, etc. Inaccessible from the east as bridge is washed out, access from the west. Fabulous location for birding. Probably best in spring, was pretty dry in May.

    Very nice walking nature trail
This is a nice walking trail approx. 1 mile around. There is a parking area clearly marked and there is a sani-can available. There is a very nice gazebo at the entrance for anyone that needs to rest before or after the walk. It's about a mile around and it's marked at the beginning of the trail to go to the left with an arrow, so if you want to stop at the lookouts along the way and rest or bird watch, plan for 1-2 hours. Bring some binoculars for bird watching and your camera in case you catch other wild life. We saw birds, a snake and on our way out some wild turkeys. There are many benches along the way as well for enjoying the nature around you. At this time, the trees are just starting to bud, so when summer comes, it will be more lush. The trail is gravel and wood so if you want to bring a stroller or have a wheelchair, it should be ok. There are no bikes allowed, dogs must be on leashes at all times and they expect you to pick up any dog waste, but please take it with you! Don't leave the bags behind. The only thing I would recommend here is that they add a trash receptacle next to the Sani-can and a map at the entrance. This is a nice trail to visit if you are in the area! Enjoy

Loved it until they put up those awful metal information signs...
I love this hike...so much nature in a short walk...but recently they have added these awful information signs...metal with locks...information that could be found online or by researching in a book. Why ruin the feeling of being outside in nature by turning this walk into yet another attempt at a children's learning experience? And the signs just clash with the wood and the nature. It's really changed how I feel about the refuge. Learn from nature itself, no place for metal signs here IMHO.
