Lovely cool hike in a glacial ravine
Rattlesnake Gutter is a lovely road in Leverett, MA that was closed to vehicular traffic over 10 years ago, but is open for hiking and biking and trail rides, as well as rock-climbing. The old road is an easy walk, and there are some recently-marked trails up the side of the ravine that are intermediate-level hiking. A nice loop from the Montague Rd end of the road takes you up the ravine, then a quick climb to the top, and back down along the top of the ravine. If it has rained recently there are a handful of pretty waterfalls adjacent to the road. Can be a nice stroll for a family or a more strenuous climb and exploration. Not too bad with mosquitos.

New trail maps available on line
The Rattlesnake Gutter Trust has recently created new trail maps on its web site -- the maps are also posted at the trail heads, but be sure to download the maps because there is NO CELL SERVICE on most of the trails. The Trust volunteers have been working very hard at maintaining the trails. Easy hiking for any age. Mountain laurels bloom in June, and the waterfalls only really run in the spring and after rain. Note-- during the winter it can be wonderful snowshoeing, but can also be icy and treacherous.
